I was just alerted to the fact that you have a mailing list for USR TC products.
I was just in the process of setting one up here. Alas, it was not an official
support offering, but intended for users to share information with one another.
Right now, I have about 8 users or so on my list. I would like to have them
subscribe to your list if you don't mind. Also, I'd like to publish a note
about your list in our quarterly newsletter.
I wanted to pass this by you in advance because they list may grow significantly
from its present size.
Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks,
John

Can you add the following to the list:
dleach@micron.net
total-control@xs4all.nl
rsanders@mindspring.com
rykowski@nwu.edu
kemper@bihs.net
roblee@cix.compulink.co.uk
sb@compulink.co.uk
I'm not very familiar with the listserv soft, so if this is a problem let me
know and I'll ask these folks to resubscribe.
Thanks,
John

No problem at all, the more the merrier and probably the better information.
You're sure you would rather have it here though than at USR?
We still don't have very many subscribers either, probably about 6 to 8
I believe. At this stage it would probably be easy to change to either
one.
Plus if we were ever to move to another platform I couldn't guarantee this
one staying open. (That would be purchasings choice to change platform
of course!! ;)

I've attempted to add all the names you gave me. Listserv used to ask
for real names also but I'll see if it will just take them. If you can
provide them that would be fine too.

I have a rack of USR TC modems, most are 28.8 but some are 14.4 and I have
a problem with disconnects. Some particulars:
1. I dial into the 28.8 with a Mac Express Modem which operates at 14.4
and I experience random disconnects. Sometimes it is immediately
after the modems finish negoiations and other times it can be after
30-60 minutes of usage.
I hear the telephone click when the modem hangs up and then in 10
seconds, MacPPP tells me that there is an echo failure.
2. Using the same Mac, I dial into a 14.4 and the connection is rock
solid. No random disconnects.
3. I have increased s10 to 100 and set &do, although the Express Modem
manual says that option doesn't do anything because there is no DTR
line to ignore.
4. The ROM code in the 28.8's is 1.0.5 with one at 1.0.3. I know the
problem occurs with the 1.0.5 and mayben with the 1.0.3 but I can't
be sure.
5. Not all of my customers seem to be having the problem. For sure, I
know of two Mac users who do. One uses an external modem and the
the other uses a Geoport.
I am at a loss for additional things to try. Does anyone have some suggestions.
Thanks.

I can't
*
* The latest Quad V.34 code is v.1.3.12 which is available as:
*
* ftp://elroy.usr.com/pub/totalcontrol/qf010312.exe.
*
* I don't recall the current release of the Dual code, but there is Dual V.34
* code dated 7/20/95 which is currently in beta.
How do I find out about this beta or participate in it?
*
* Do the users modems give them a disconnect reason? USR modems will give
* this on the ATI6. This is extremely helpful in fixing these types of
* problems. If you can send that to your rack modem from the term server
* or whatever, that would be helpful too.
I operate the Rack modems in dumb mode to keep them from going into a
dialog loop with the terminal server. Also, I don't think it is possible
to have the term server get the disconnect reason and store it for
presentation later.
*
* If you're using the TC Windows/SNMP software, you can click on a modem
* go into session monitor and poll the modem for a disconnect reason.
I just have the TC Rack without the management software.

We're looking into using Sun Net Manager or Cabletron's Spectrum to
manage our TCs. At the moment though, we're using the USR/Novell
software.

Its not possible to change the idle pattern the T1 card sends back to
telco. Does the switch being used not allow an all ones pattern for
idle?

Subject:SNMP management issues From: Ray Kopp <rjkopp@mailbox.syr.edu> Date: 1995-08-25 00:01:34
I've been looking at the SNMP management tool. We currently use the DOS
based management. Since I do not have direct control over this evaluation
unit I can't really attempt to manage it, but I need to know some things
about it.
We are anticipating moving to SNMP management but my review of the product
is long overdue.
We most likely would be using quad or dual V.34 modems with the cisco 2511
communications servers.
Issues:
The old DOS system had many capabilities such that if a modem did not
answer after x number of rings you could put it through a self test
and either busy it out or put it back in service. You could also do this
on any other modem failure.
Does the SNMP management now have this capability. (This is hands off
reaction, not notify someone so they can go and physically busy it out)
The old system also had some histories/logs. One particular one we want
is the one that tell the last valid speed of the modem before disconnect.
What I need to know is does this capability exist in the SNMP package
and a little description of how this type of logging/history is created
and stored for later use.
Lastly what basic complaints do you have with it.
Also please indicate what you run it on, machine type size, memory etc.
Thanks,
Ray Kopp

1. USR Dual T1 Card incompatibility with HK TELCO
Subject:USR Dual T1 Card incompatibility with HK TELCO From: Mr Charles Lau <charlesl@hk.super.net> Date: 1995-08-31 00:04:46
We are having a problem connecting the USRobotics Total Control Dual T1 Card
to the local phone company.
Loop start is being used.
1. The idle signal A,B for the T1 Card is 0,1 while the local phone company
is 1,1
2. The local phone company use the A,B signal at the same time i.e.
either 1,1 or 0,0
There seems to be no way the local phone company will change their signaling
pattern, we wonder whether there are anyone out there who had encounter
this kind of problem.
Could a flash ROM reprogramming solves this problem?
