Media Services does not tolerate such activity, and will take any steps
available to us to terminate such activity. Some things we already do- for
example, we license the Lsoft Listserv software which has the best (though
not perfect) tools on the market for filtering out unwanted postings. We
warn users who distribute "chain letters" and shut down persistent
offenders.
If you have problems with unwanted postings, please contact me and we will
help you in any way we can to solve the problem. Be sure to save copies of
the undesirable materials; the more documentation you have, the easier it
is for us to identify and deal with the offender(s). If you feel
sufficiently threatened so that you do not want yourself identified to the
offender, we will maintain your confidentiality if at all possible. Again,
we take such incidents very seriously, and strive to take prompt action
when we have concrete information.

Subject:Some advice From: Ray Kopp <rjkopp@mailbox.syr.edu> Date: 1995-10-11 14:16:30
We are contemplating buying some more modems and I've asked for alot
of advice on this in the past and have got much, once again though
I could use alittle more and maybe alittle more specific.
We are currently managing our racks using the DOS based Total Control
Product. The SNMP sounds very good it seems like it could solve some
problems that have been plaguing us, particularly keeping a cluster of
racks intact during configuration changes.
If anyone else has gone through this change I would like to hear from
you, what you felt you gained, what you felt you lost and what gains
do you feel you got in a time saved/money saved sense that I can use
for amunition to move towards this conversion.
Incidentally I did get a chance to use the SNMP management in a small
way and it did run OK for me, however the person that I was working with
complained that sometimes the Network Management Modules would not answer
and then he couldn't do anything with the rack. He had these on a fairly
un-busy subnet. I noticed this happened once on me, so I changed my time-
out parameters on the setup for communications with the rack and I'm not
sure if it was co-incidence or my change but that did seem to work.
Does anyone have any recollection of a problem such as this when setting up?
Also what recommendations can you suggest for the management station.
Should it be on the same network as the modems? I plan on using a 386
or 486 (the person who I mentioned that was complaining about losing contact
with the rack was using a 486/50 PC).
The other person also had a few modems fail (he only had 6 cards! for about
2 months).
Thanks,
Ray Kopp

I'm using a 486/66 and plan to upgrade to a P75. Got 5 full racks.
