Please provide the following information so we can set up your list. The easiest way is to: -receive this file -xedit it and enter the information -enter the FILE command after the information is complete -send it back with the SENDFILE command: SENDFILE LISTSETP INFO TO LISTMGR ====================================================================== List name (8 characters or less). ________ Examples: MIDEARTH (for Tolkien's Middle Earth discussion group) SUFOOT (for SU Football) List description (60 characters or less): ____________________________________________________________ List owner (person responsible for maintaining the list) Userid _____________________________ Name _____________________________ College/Dept __________________________ Address _____________________________ Phone _____________________________ SUID/SS# _____________________________ Faculty sponsor (if owner is not a faculty member): Name: ___________________________ Phone: _______________ Userid: __________________ List characteristics: Subscription= ________ Open (Default). New users can subscribe themselves By_owner New users must ask the list owner in order to subscribe. LISTSERV will notify the owner when a user attempts to subscribe. Closed Users cannot subscribe themselves and LISTSERV will not ask the list owner to subscribe them. Review= ______ Public (default) Anyone can review (find out who belongs to) the list. Private Only the list owner and subscribers can review the list. This is not meaningful if Subscription=Open as anyone can subscribe, review, and unsubscribe. Send= ______ Private (Default) Only members can send to the list. Public Anyone can send to the list. Editor Only the editor can send to the list. Mail first goes to the editor (editor is usually the owner.) Confidential= ___ Confidential defines who can find out that a list exists by querying LISTSERV (this is different from REVIEW which queries who belongs to a list) Yes (default) List is confidential so is advertised nowhere. List name won't appear in the output from a LISTSERV LIST or LISTSERV LIST GLOBAL command (you can't query LISTSERV to find the list). No List is not confidential, so is advertised in the GLOBAL list of lists supported by LISTSERV. Use this value to create a worldwide list. List name will appear in the output of a LISTSERV LIST or LISTSERV LIST GLOBAL command. Service List is confidential, except for users who are in the "service" area as defined below. It is never advertised in the global list of lists. Service= _____ Local LISTSERV will accept subscriptions from userids on nodes in the local service area. These are BITNET nodes which begin with SU and InterNet nodeswhose domain names end in SYR.EDU. Attempts to subscribe from outside the local service area will be rejected. * The service area is world wide .. <host list> Comma delimited list of hosts comprising service area. DIGEST=______________ Defines if messages are batched up into digests. Available Frequency can be Daily,Weekly, or Monthly. Means that messages are accumulated No (default) over a defined period (usually a day), and then that accumulation is sent out at a predefined Yes time (usually midnight). A table of subject headers is provided at the front of the digest. <Yes> means that subscribers get digested postings unless they explicitly change the option. <Available> means subscribers can get digests if they set the Digest option. <No> means Digests will not be available. Advantages: cuts down on the number of mail files, and reduces computer system load. Can make it faster to scan one's mail. Not useful for low traffic lists (1 or 2 postings per day) unless a longer digest period is used. Individual subscribers can turn Digest off, i.e., some can receive digestified postings while others don't. Owner subscribed: This is a change. The owner(s) will need to subscribe themselves. Note: when subscribing folks on RODAN or ZOOKEEPER, use the address userid@mailbox.syr.edu Do NOT! use RODAN or ZOOKEEPER in the address. This does not affect folks subscribing themselves (when the list allows them to do so). *********************************************************************** * ALL LISTSERV List Owners * * * * Send commands to LISTSERV using email The general procedure is: * * * * -create an email message to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU * * * * -do not use a subject line * * * * -type each command on a separate line in the body of the mail * * (where you would normally type your message). * * * * -we recommend deleting any signatures (.sig) at the end of this * * mail message to LISTSERV. LISTSERV tries to interpret your * * signature as LISTSERV commands, and since it can't understand * * your signature, will generate some error messages which may * * be confusing. Correct commands will still be processed. * * * * -when you've entered all commands (you can send more than one at * * a time), send the mail. * * * * An example (note: your mailer will automatically generate everything* * except your commands to the list. You may not even see * * some of the following. That's ok.) * * * * Date: 12 Dec 1992 * * <your mailer may put other lines in the header; that's ok> * * From: yourid@node.xxx.edu * * To: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU * * <<<<this line must be blank>>> * * ADD listname userid@node fullname * * DEL listname userid@node * * * *********************************************************************** ******************* List Owner Commands ****************************** SUBSCRIBE people to the LIST. Note: it doesn't usually matter whether you use upper or lower case. ADD listname userid@node fullname e.g., to add userid John Doe JDOE@MAILBOX.SYR.EDU to the list MYLIST ADD MYLIST jdoe@mailbox.syr.edu John Doe For sites such as MAILBOX & SUADMIN be sure to use the full Internet address, e.g., mailbox.syr.edu. ADD MYLIST jsmith@mailbox.syr.edu Listserv will return a message saying either a) this person has been successfully enrolled and that a message has been sent to them to that effect; or b) an error message describing a problem. If a member's userid is invalid (non existant or misspelled) LISTSERV will return a message to you stating that it could not process your command for some particular reason. This return message could take a considerable amount of time. DELETE someone from the LIST: DELETE listname userid@node e.g. DELETE MYLIST jdoe@mailbox.syr.edu Be sure to type in the userid and nodename exactly as they were originally entered (however, you can use upper or lower case). The list owner and subscriber will receive messages similar to those when someone is added to a list. REVIEW: To find out who belongs to a LIST use the following command: REVIEW listname A file will be mailed to you containing the members of the list, including full names and userids. This can be a good way to check misspelled userids. To correct a misspelled userid the incorrect userid must be deleted and the correct userid added (Using the add and delete commands). The order of this operation is irrelevant. The REVIEW command is also useful when someone tells you they cannot unsubscribe from the list, or when postings to the list are rejected. If you do a review, you can then search the review for subscribers with addresses or names similar to the one having problems. Typically, the user has changed userids and/or had mail forwarded from one userid to a newer one. This process may help you identify the old userid which will probably need to be deleted. ***************** Subscribing to a List ********************** You can send the following information to users who want to subscribe to your list. You might consider customizing it by substituting your listname for "MYLIST" in the instructions. To subscribe to a LIST, use the following command. Note: it doesn't usually matter whether you use upper or lower case. Note that "SUB" and "UNSUB" are allowed abbreviations for "SUBSCRIBE" and "UNSUBSCRIBE". SUB listname fullname e.g., to subscribe to list MYLIST, and your name is Jane Doe SUB MYLIST Jane Doe To unsubscribe from a LIST, use the following command. Note: it doesn't usually matter whether you use upper or lower case. UNSUB listname e.g., to unsubscribe from list MYLIST UNSUB MYLIST ********* Controlling DIGEST option *************** If Digests are available for your list, your individual users can control if they receive list postings in regular or digest form. To turn DIGEST on: SET listname DIGEST To turn DIGEST off: SET listname MAIL ************ Setting NOMAIL for vacation ************** You can temporarily suspend mail (and remain subscribed) by the command SET listname NOMAIL to resume mail, use <SET listname MAIL> or <SET listname DIGEST> ************ Security ************** While problems do not commonly happen, unauthorized people sometimes tamper with lists. Unfortunately, identifying the culprit or what actually happened (or whether user error caused a problem) can be difficult. Some of the things which can occur include - removing subscribers without their knowledge - change subscription options without subscriber's knowledge - (worse) faking mail from the list owner to make major list changes. The greatest exposure is to larger or non-local lists. We recommend two steps to minimize problems; you will need to decide how much risk your list can tolerate. - set Validate=Yes, Confirm This will ask users to reply confirming subscription change requests (unsubscribe, set digest, etc.). - add a password to your list This will require providing a password with each command you send. ************* Questions ************** If you have any questions please send email to LISTMGR@MAILBOX.SYR.EDU. Subject: You are now subscribed to the USRTC list

Mon, 12 Jun 1995 14:12:53 Your subscription to the USRTC list (US Robotics Total Control Product) has been accepted. Please save this message for future reference, especially if you are not familiar with LISTSERV. This might look like a waste of disk space now, but in 6 months you will be glad you saved this information when you realize that you cannot remember what are the lists you are subscribed to, or what is the command to leave the list to avoid filling up your mailbox while you are on vacations. In fact, you should create a new mail folder for subscription confirmation messages like this one, and for the "welcome messages" from the list owners that you will occasionally receive after subscribing to a new list. To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to USRTC@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU. This is called "sending mail to the list", because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes copies for all the people who have subscribed. This address (USRTC@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU) is also called the "list address". You must never try to send any command to that address, as it would be distributed to all the people who have subscribed. All commands must be sent to the "LISTSERV address", LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU. It is very important to understand the difference between the two, but fortunately it is not complicated. The LISTSERV address is like a FAX number, and the list address is like a normal phone line. If you make your FAX call someone's regular phone number by mistake, it will be an unpleasant experience for him but you will probably be excused the first time. If you do it regularly, however, he will probably get upset and send you a nasty complaint. It is the same with mailing lists, with the difference that you are calling hundreds or thousands of people at the same time, so a lot more people get annoyed if you use the wrong number. You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF USRTC" command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU. You can also tell LISTSERV how you want it to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the list. If you do not trust the system, send a "SET USRTC REPRO" command and LISTSERV will send you a copy of your own messages, so that you can see that the message was distributed and did not get damaged on the way. After a while you may find that this is getting annoying, especially if your mail program does not tell you that the message is from you when it informs you that new mail has arrived from USRTC. If you send a "SET USRTC ACK NOREPRO" command, LISTSERV will mail you a short acknowledgement instead, which will look different in your mailbox directory. With most mail programs you will know immediately that this is an acknowledgement you can read later. Finally, you can turn off acknowledgements completely with "SET USRTC NOACK NOREPRO". Following instructions from the list owner, your subscription options have been set to "SHORTHDR" rather than the usual LISTSERV defaults. For more information about subscription options, send a "QUERY USRTC" command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU. Please note that it is presently possible for anybody to determine that you are signed up to the list through the use of the "REVIEW" command, which returns the e-mail address and name of all the subscribers. If you do not want your name to be visible, just issue a "SET USRTC CONCEAL" command. More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the LISTSERV reference card, which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO REFCARD" command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU.
