Subject:Dial-Back Security From: Mr Francis Fong <francisf@hk.super.net> Date: 1996-11-08 00:00:14
Dear Everybody,
Would anybody tell us how the Dial-back security can be achieved in PPP
mode, when the client side is Windows 95. We know the Gold Clinet is not
supporting Windows 95. Do the Win 95 Dialer support this with the
NetServer? What we should do to configurated for both side? We have no
problem in configurating the Quad Modem for dial-back, but once the Quad
Modem call-back, the NetServer won't assign any IP address, or the Win 95
Dialer won't answer. Any other TCPIP dialer that support dial-back
security? Pls also advise.

Subject:Anyone seen this? From: Ray Kopp <rjkopp@mailbox.syr.edu> Date: 1996-11-13 00:00:14
We use Cisco 2511s with U.S. Robotics Courier modems. We use them
strictly for terminal emulation, ppp and slip. Dial out only.
What we've seen happening lately is that certain lines will get hung.
Some have symptoms some don't.
The ones that do when you do the command "finger who@comm_server_name"
will return a line such as "3 tty 3" with nothing else after it.
Normally a line is "3 tty 3 userid syr.edu 0" where syr.edu
would be where someone is connecting to and 0 is the idle time of the
connection. Also when you look at the modem there is no DTR present.
The other is a case where the modem just seems to get in a weird state
and doesn't answer. If you have auto response it will recognize (usually
the ring-no-answer) situation but you need to do a hardware reset on the
NIC associated with that line (on the entire module, not just the one
line).
If anyone has seen this or knows any reasons for it I would appreciate any
input.
Thanks,
Ray Kopp

We use a mix of couriers and sportsters on our 2511.
The init string I used for the couriers is
AT&F1
AT&K3S10=30S13=1S32=6S2=128TE0Q1X3&W
and also don't forget to set the dip switches like this:
1,2,3 - OFF
4 ON
5,6,7 OFF
8,9 ON
10 OFF
The important thing above is ATS13=1 which tells the courier
to reset itself when the line is hung up. I had some problems
before I did this because sometimes the modems were left in
a weird state after a connect. Now they reset themselves everytime
and everything works just fine.

The 2511 lines are configured like this:
interface Group-Async1
ip unnumbered Ethernet0
ip tcp header-compression passive
encapsulation ppp
async dynamic address
async mode interactive
no cdp enable
ppp authentication chap
group-range 1 16
line 1 16
autoselect during-login
autoselect ppp
modem DialIn
transport input all
stopbits 1
rxspeed 115200
txspeed 115200
flowcontrol hardware

Absolutely no special wiring. Just connect the cisco-supplied
25-pin connectors to the modems and off you go.

I had simmilar problems back when I was using IOS 11.0(4).
Then I upgraded to 11.0(11) and the problems disappeared.

Ray:
I have three 2511 access servers I put in this past summer for dial-in
access to our campus network. I have one US Robotics MP/16 modem rack
and 32 external Zyxel 28.8 modems. The modems in the US Robitics rack
are the same as Courier modems, just different packaging.
I was also seeing lines that hung up as you describe. Also, PPP connections
would get disconnected at random times. I had a case open with
Cisco Tech Support for a month, trying different things that they suggested
without coming to a solution. Finally they had me upgrade the IOS to
11.0(11). I was running 11.0(5) which is what was installed on the
2511's when I bought them last June. That has fixed the problems. They
have been rock-solid since the upgrade. No disconnected PPP sessions,
no hung lines. Of course now I've got students that dial-up, run PPP,
and stay connected for days at a time. But that's another problem :-)
