Subject: (usr-tc) HyperArc Accounting problem...

Friday evening all of my 3Com hubs developed problems with the accounting function. First, the radius server came under so much load that it stopped processing authentication packets at all. During the course of evaluation I diabled accounting on each chassis and the problem went away. I then reconfigured the accounting and reenabled, but I am not getting any accoungint packets at the radius server, nor does the 'monitor radius' command indicate the chassis is creating any. I'm lost. Any ideas? I seem to have recovered the acounting function. In 3Com's infinite wisdom you can have the primary accounting server enabled and show as enabled, but overall accounting disabled and not shown anywhere. I still odn't know what let loose and was hosing my radius server though. Do you mean you can't ping it or see it in TCM on the old address or the new address? It sounds like you mean that you have changed the IP on the NMC but it still answers to the old IP. Is that correct? Does it still do this if you reboot the NMC (be sure to save the NVRAM first, from the File menu in TCM). > I haven't been able to console into the NMC either. Do you use the > same cable that you console into the HiPer Arc with? Yes, but the speed will be different. The speed on the NMC can be anything from 9600 to 57600, selectable by the DIP switches on the NMC NAC. Set switches 1 and 2 to off for 9600, on for 57600. I recommend 57600; it works much better if you ever have to flash the NMC over the console port :-) It sounds like you are in the same location as the chassis, so it would be worth pulling the NMC NAC out to check. The DIP switches are very near the bottom front of the card, just behind the face plate. If switches 1 and 2 aren't set to on, switch them to on, then make a 57600 console connection. We are now having problems with one of our chassis' getting an out-of-sync accounting packet error. It leads me to believe there is a problem with time configuration. How do I set the timezone and ntp correctly to effect the correct local time? The odd thing is all the servers were showing the same time, local plus 5 hours (GMT). One of the machines was generating the error with the radius server and the problem went away when I set it's time to the local value. The other servers are still set to utc and are working correctly. Greg, Your used equipment is worth more than you are asking and it does not have HiPer NMCs required for v.92. CommWorks has rebate programs that can net you more cash if you purchase new gear to replace what you are selling. Note: $8200 for 5 HiPer DSPs or 120 ports is $68/port If you purchase a Multi-Span Chassis (96 ports, Dual 130A, New ARC, 333MHz NMC and a Multi-Span Card (96 ports) 192 ports total you can get the following rebates. $90 x first 96 ports in chassis bundle = $8640 $40 x second 96 ports = $3840 Total = $12,480 in rebates or $65/port @ 192 ports (The rebate/port slides as you add additional blades to the same base unit) Since you have 7 total HiPer DSPs for sale x 24 port = 168 ports $90 x first 96 ports in chassis bundle = $8640 $40 x second 72 ports turned in = $2880 Total = $11,520 or $68.57/port There is also a program for Quad Card Upgrades to HiPer @ $50 on Double Plays or $75 per port on HiPer Starter Bundles and you can also move all the way to the Multi-Span at the $40 on Multi-Span Blades and $90 on Multi-Span Chassis See the web sites for rules/descriptions and forms. http://www.commworks.com/svprovider/programs/total_control_eds/promos.html Call your authorized reseller to see if we can put together a better deal then selling off used or buying used. I have a hiper NMC card with an unknown password on it. I know on the reg nmc cards that you flipped dip switch 5 or 6 to reset this. Is it the same for the hiperNMC one? What dipswitch is it?

Hi Folks, We have two USR Total Control boxes being used for dial-in customers (we're an ISP). When I do a shoe sessions on these boxes the Host/Inet/Dest column shows the name of the dynamic IP the customer got when he/she logged in (such as user14.jellico.com), not the actual IP address (shch as 65.207.131.14). Due to some royal screwups by our upstream provider on our zone files, I believe that this is causing serious problems for us. Is there ANY way to reconfigure these boxes so that this shows as IP address? In other words, when one of these users goes to POP mail. I'ld like the request to come from 65.207.131.14, not user14.jellico.com Thanks, Lisa Casey

If this is the case, nothing you do on your box will have an effect, the DNS issues must be corrected. Alternately, contact the mail server admin and have him disable lookups. -- Kirk Mitchell-General Manager mitch@keyconn.net Keystone Connect Unlock Your World Altoona, PA 814-941-5000 http://www.keyconn.net

Well, this should not cause an problems at all, when you do a show session all you are asking the Total control is to display the sessions and its basically tranlating the IP to the host nameServer If you look at the name it basically resolves as Address: 207.155.183.72#53 Name: user14.jellico.com Address: 65.207.131.14 If you do not want to see this - the easy way is to remove the DNS server name on the total control, it will not resolve the IP to that name - V > At 04:20 PM 8/18/01 -0400, Lisa Casey wrote: > >Hi Folks, > > > >We have two USR Total Control boxes being used for dial-in customers (we're > >an ISP). DNS doesn't quite work like that -- if you don't want the name to show up at your POP3 server, take it out of DNS completely. This is a DNS issue, not a Total Control issue. But the big question is why is having a hostname there a problem at all? The POP3 server shouldn't generally care whether the IP resolves to a hostname or not -- unless there's something like TCP Wrappers configured in Paranoid mode that's dropping connections when the forward and reverse lookups don't match. (Which again isn't a Total Control issue, it's misconfigured DNS.) Russian Caller ID" and usual Caller ID work _very_ different. "Russian Caller ID" is avialable for some USR Courier modems as a firmware "AVC(Advanced Voice Courier)": http://www.usrmodem.ru/download.shtml (sorry, Russian only) but authors of this firmware say that AVC cannot work with rackmount USR Courier modems, for example QMC modems.

There are a couple of ways to get around it. If I remember correctly, if you do a "save all" and a reboot, it'll compact the configuration down somewhat or something like that. That might give you enough space to get it onto the flash. Alternatively, if you do with with z-modem at the console during bootup it might give you more to work with. I think maybe the Arc may store some stuff in flash during normal operating, and those files are not there during bootup so that gives you more to work with. I do remember that 5.0.9 was where they started running into issues about people running out of flash on early arcs that had only 8 megs I believe (you likely also only have 64 megs of regular RAM in that case). Weren't there two ways to flash up to 5.0.9? I think that if you have the 64MB version of the hiper arc, it takes two steps to flash it. You flash up to an intermediate version and then flash again to the full version. It's been a while since I've done it, so I might be thinking of a different version. Tom, can you give us an official position on the status of the following items: V.92 and what else is required in the chassis like hipernmc's What level of functionality for v.92 V.44 Due dates for both The reason I am asking is another vendor with both already under the belt is pushing real hard to buy this 3Com stuff from me and set me up. I'm still trying to figure out if 3Com/Commworks is the horse to ride in this race and I suspect others are as well. I'm not looking for special insight though that would be nice, just the official line. Where can I find information about features of new firmwares for Quad Modem Cards ? I found here http://totalservice.3com.com only filenames of firmwares! TCM shows for my Quad Modems: 2 QMCs: Modem Model v34FaxISDN Hardware Revision 0.3.0 Supervisor Software Date 03/10/99 Supervisor Software Revision 6.0.6 other 2 QMCs: Modem Model v34FaxISDN Hardware Revision 0.3.0 Supervisor Software Date 03/18/98 Supervisor Software Revision 5.9.9 So I think it is now qf060006.zip(Quad Modem Double-Sided, TCS 3.5/3.6) and qf050909.zip(Quad Modem Double-Sided, TCS 3.1/3.1.1/3) in them??? What does "TCS" mean ? Please tell me about qf060086.zip and qr060186.zip, which I have and am going to download to my QMCs. Can I use it with my QMCs at all? Which featutes do they have comparing with my old firmwares?

Hi, Is HiPer NMC actually necessary for v.92 to function? I'm guessing that to force an upgrade to HiPer NMC that no mib support for v.92 knobs will be in the next 486 NMC? That would be bad. I really have no incentive other than this to upgrade my NMC cards. They work just fine :) Charles | Charles Sprickman | Internet Channel | INCH System Administration Team | (212)243-5200 | spork@inch.com | access@inch.com On Sun, 26 Aug 2001 Thomas_Goodman@3com.com wrote: > > > V.92 was posted for Beta last week (August 23, 2001). Mr. Goodman, Does 3com feel good about how they are going to distribute v.92? When others are giving it away? and encouraging all the 3com ISPs to switch with some nice incentives? We have competitors that have v.92 and it didn't cost them a dime... 3com needs to realize that we have paid handsomely for our equipment and if they want ISP's to continue to support and stick with them they should be considering upgrades for this stuff for free or relatively cheap. Oh and please do not say "if you are under a support blah... blah... blah". You are in the equipment business... we bought the equipment... not 3com's terrible support... we do our own support and do a very good job of it I might add. I have both PM3s and Cisco AS5248s that were purchased at the same time as my TotalControl Hiper systems and that won't ever see v.92 loaded onto them. Some of my Hiper equipment just turned 3 years old, and the fact that it's even able to migrate to the latest standards is something I value. Now I'd rather not have to pay for that, but after 3 years of use I don't think that the replacement of 1 card to bring an entire chassis up to an entirely new standard is such a terrible thing. Maybe 3Com would consider a trade-in program for the NMC. It would cost considerably more to move all of my ports to another vendor than it would to simply upgrade the NMC. V.92 - we're still smarting over the bugs in the NETserver that were never fixed. We were told to buy a contract to get them fixed, so we did. Then we get told they'll never be fixed and to buy an ARC instead. *Buy*? We paid for support to fix these things and get told the only way is to buy another product? We didn't care if 3COM decided to remedy the problem by *giving* us ARC's, but of course that didn't happen. > We have competitors that have v.92 and it didn't cost them a dime... My honest opinion is that 3COM don't want to be in the RAS business. They charge like wounded bulls for support and then don't deliver what they promise. Warranty support was nigh on impossible for us to get, and even now that case is still pending. One warranty case was closed recently without even consulting us, well before the problem was resolved and now rather than refer to the previous case notes we're being forced to go through the whole process from the start - again. > Oh and I am NOT alone on this one... 75% on this list feel the same > way I do. No doubt. The only reason we recently bought more 3COM was because it was too cheap to turn down (a fully populated HiPer chassis at half Cisco prices). Needless to say we didn't buy it from 3COM, but from a reseller who was stuck with it. > We have well over 2500 ports and we are NOT happy! I searched my own limited archives of this list and found some notes regarding routing a subnet to a customer. In that scenario, the arc must be an ASBR. I've made it one for good measure :) But it's not even advertising HOST routes! The cisco and the arc do see each other as neighbors, and their are some routes hitting the arc FROM the cisco, but not vice-versa. Not a one. > The OSPF configuration for the HARC is a long convoluted mess and took me > several tries over the period of about a year to finally get it to function > correctly (which even today is suspect). It took me more than a year to decide to jump in and attack it. Now I know why I waited... Support? From 3com? Good luck... Pitfalls... no upgrading without more cost. -- Edgar D. Taylor -----Original Message----- [mailto:owner-usr-tc@lists.xmission.com]On Behalf Of Bennie Warren Sent: Monday, August 27, 2001 11:03 PM I am new to this list. I am preparing to buy a TC1000 chassis with 2 Hiperarc cards, 2 DS3 Ingress cards and 7 DSP cards. My questions are, does anyone else have any configuration even close to this? Is everyone happy with the support they get? How about pitfalls? I was also looking for a much more active list, any inputs on that? Thanks for any input on these items. We're in the same boat, and Ariel now has a neat deal where they will convert IMT (Intermachine Trunks) to 24 line PRI's using their SS7 Switch... so our final PRI cost was less than $300 for 24 lines... the catch, we must use Ariel RAS equipment. Hi, I'm running ARC 4.2.32, and I'm seeing some odd things with OSPF and sendpolicy matching. For example, here's my current sendpolicy: HiPer-1>> list osPF seNDPOLICY OSPF Send Policies: Source Address/Mask Action LOCAL x.x.193.000/C Advertise LOCAL x.x.195.000/C Do Not Advertise LOCAL x.x.197.000/C Do Not Advertise LOCAL x.x.199.000/C Advertise If I put a test user in x.x.193.0/24 somewhere, the host route is propogated to the neighbor (Cisco) fine. If I put the test user in x.x.199.0/24, it is not. Looking at the database on the cisco, I do not see the route at all. If I remove all the sendpolicy's, the x.x.199.x user's host route does propogate. I also have the two class C's that I do NOT want advertised, and the arc is spewing all the /32's at the cisco. From their web page: "In conjunction with all the above reasons to buy a RS2000, Ariel's recent price reduction makes NOW the perfect time to purchase remote access server equipment to help you start or expand your business. At just $2,376 for a 24-port, T1/PRI PCI card, you can't afford to pass on this opportunity!" But there's a guy here selling used DSP's for $1500 quite often... That's only $62/port. And when you throw away your quads, you've got quite a bit of room :) Of course they'll probably EOL the T1 DSPs as they ramp up the DS3 cards... Beuhler? ) There should be an anonymous web page where ISP's can post the number of ports replacing, and with what vendor to show 3COM that the jig is up. -- Paul Farber Farber Technology farber@admin.f-tech.net Ph 570-628-5303 Fax 570-628-5545 On Wed, 29 Aug 2001, Bennie Warren wrote: > *This message was transferred with a trial version of CommuniGate(tm) Pro* > What is the price they are charging without the support contract? Why anonymous? I'd be happy to let them know what the final decision is here if they'd even just accept my email address. *shrug* Its clear that 3Com doesn't want to hear from their customers. Did any of you all read the 10K? Good grief! Claflin and company should be indicted! I would think, based on the performance of 3Com as a company, that they wouldn't be getting any bonus at all...I guess that's what I get for having those pesky ethics. -- Jeff McAdams Email: jeffm@iglou.com Head Network Administrator Voice: (502) 966-3848 IgLou Internet Services (800) 436-4456

One thing that got me to move on from 3COM is that most of the small mid ISP's need RAS, not VoIP or wireless access etc etc etc..... but good, reliable modem pools to feed the masses. -- Paul Farber Farber Technology farber@admin.f-tech.net Ph 570-628-5303 Fax 570-628-5545 On Wed, 29 Aug 2001, Jeff Mcadams wrote: > We're thinking about Cisco...a bit more expensive than the Patton > offering...but some really cool extra capabilities come with it.

Sorry to interrupt your regularly scheduled 3Com bashing, but: Anyone had any trouble getting logging of filtered packets to work? I've got packet logging set to "all", size 80, but don't get anything logged under ARC 5.1.99 code. This used to work fine... I know I have to be missing something really really obvious here... but I haven't had to touch my ARCs in so long I can't remember. (Not having to touch them is a good thing, of course... it means they work...) The 8MB Rom chip is onboard and from what I can tell is not replaceable, the RAM can be upgraded with the following chip. 128MB EDO 168pin BUFFERED 3.3v - Mike Rock Island Communications, Inc. How about pitfalls? I was also looking for > a much more active list, any inputs on that? We had been an all-3Com shop up until this summer. When it came time to add 40 PRIs of capacity to our Tokyo POP, we went with two Cisco AS5400s and one AS5300 and have been very happy with the level of support shown to us by both our vendor and Cisco. I would tend to agree with Jeff McAdams on this: don't go 3Com. If you want something cheap, get Patton (caveat: nothing in a Patton RAS is field replaceable, so you might want to consider keeping a hot spare around. But they, they're cheap, so you can do that). If you want something enterprise-level, give Cisco a look. Cheers, Jonathan
