I'm wondering if there is a way to tell in HyperAccess or by telneting to the rack to see if a user is using mppp. Is there a way to tell if an ISDN user is using two modems?
Thanks,

"list conn" will show multiple user logons, but won't indicate whether or
not it's a mppp connection or 2 seperate sessions. "list networks" will
show logons with assigned IP addresses, if both logons have the same IP,
it's a mppp session.

I'm well familiar with dealing with hung DSP modem pairs and getting them
reset. I have, however, started seeing oddities where it appears that
single modems aren't quite hanging, but showing higher than normal failure
rates and exhibiting other problems when connections are made, such as
rapidly deteriorating transfer speeds, virtual shutdown of TCP/IP traffic,
etc.
Has anybody else experienced similar? Codes being run currently are shown
below, and haven't changed since December or so.
ARC 4.2.32
NMC 6.1.17
DSP 2.0.81

Subject:(usr-tc) DSP problems From: Steve Cobb <stevec@geeksnet.com> Date: 2000-11-03 18:43:37
I've got a TCR with 2 HyperDSPs working fine connected to PRIs. I've had to add another DSP because of expansion. I've got the card in the TCR and have copied the configuration from one DSP to the new DSP, ie trunk settings, swith type, etc. My users are getting unusual high tones at handshake and then the connection drops. I've talked with several 3COM technicians who have said the card is setup correctly. I've had the PRI checked by the telco technician twice and they say that the PRI is good. The 3COM technician had me look at the errors on the span and they were incredibly high for the new card. The telco say that when he hookd his "t-bird" to it (whatever that is) he doesn't get any errors. Anybody have any ideas on how to troubleshoot this? There is a lot of finger-pointing going on.
Thanks,
Steve Cobb

If you're getting a high error rate ensure you've got all your T1/PRI line
settings correct; ie: line coding, framing, and timing. It's entirely
possible that the telco delivered one line provisioned one way and another
in a completely different manner. Try to get the telco to verify all that
info. Line coding is either B8ZS or AMI, framing is either ESF or D4, and
timing source can be supplied by the telco (line) or you (internal).

In addition to what Charles mentioned...might try to have the telco run
from their t-bird head to head with the DSP...even providing the D
channel if the model of t-bird they have can do that. Also might have
the telco plug the t-bird into the monitor ports on the DSP if they're
willing (some telco folks are anal and won't do anything with you beyond
the demarc...some are cool though and will work with you...hope you get
the latter :), and let the t-bird see what the DSP card is seeing.

I can't imagine any situation (involving telco dial tone and a TC chassis)
that you would want to be anything other than loop timed, ie, the telco
suppling the timing.

I've been using RIPv2 to allow our Cisco to route to our TCs, but I just

percent of the CPU. Is there anything that can be done to decrease the amount
of RIP updates that the TCs send? Is OSPF less of a pig? Should I segement
things so that I proxy arp the regular dialups and only RIP a subnet for the

Any thoughts appreciated.

passive-interface on the cisco is your friend!
If you passive-interface all of your RIP interfaces on the cisco, then
the cisco knows it doesn't have to keep track of many of the timers on
each route that it has to keep track of if its not set for
passive-interface. Each route has a timer associated with it so the
router knows when it needs to rebroadcast the route back out again...by
eliminating these timers with the passive-interface command, I dropped
the cpu load on my 7507 from ~50% to ~15%
The only thing you loose by putting passive-interface on everything on
the cisco is the ability for the cisco to inform the Arcs about routes
it has...but since the usual mode of deployment is for the Arcs to be
default routed to the cisco...you really don't loose much of any
functionality.

Can the customer connect if they set their ISDN equipment to use 56kbps
channels rather than 64kbps? It could be that a telco has a circuit
somewhere in there that is using robbed-bit signalling or something like
that which is preventing 64kbps clear channel calls from going through
correctly.

There used to be a problem with the piggy back board for ISDN having a memory
leak and running out of memory then ceasing to function. (Several years ago).
The symptoms are just as you described.
I think we put a terminal on the console of the arc and saw "out of memory"
messages that gave the clue.
Solution at that time was two fold. You could re-boot either the arc or nmc
and it would reset the memory and be good for a while. (In our case it was a
couple of months). Later on we had some information about switching the isdn
detection/hardware to a different card and that solved the problem
completely. I think we switched it to the dsp card instead of the arc card.
Its been a while.
Subject:RE: (usr-tc) Odd problem From: Marius Kirschner <marius@agoron.com> Date: 2000-11-10 09:55:00
When I telnet into our TC and do a "show all" is displays the following for
the ISDN ports:
I0 idle 0.0.0.0 Login/ IDLE 0 0 0
I1 idle 0.0.0.0 Login/ IDLE 0 0 0
I2 idle 0.0.0.0 Login/ IDLE 0 0 0
I3 idle 0.0.0.0 Login/ IDLE 0 0 0
I4 idle 0.0.0.0 Login/ IDLE 0 0 0
Can somebody please verify that this is what it should display when nobody
is using the ports? Thanks,

Thanks for the pointer! When I did that though, the updates did not seem to be
getting through to the router. I'm going to try again because is seems that
some changes sort of blow the Cisco's mind for a bit.
Thanks again!

Sounds good on the TC side (although I tend to forget these things after a year
or so.) On the Cisco side, I have things set up as follows:
router rip
version 2
timers basic 30 30 2 60 300
passive-interface Serial1/0
passive-interface Serial1/1
passive-interface BRI2/0
network 1.2.3.0
network 1.2.4.0
network 1.2.5.0
no auto-summary
I cut some networks out, but this basically works for me. You might want to go
the the interface that you are ripping over and do a:
ip rip receive version 2
Finally, you might want to enable some debugging to see if updates are making
their way to the Cisco:
term mon
debug ip rip events
One other little thing. The first time I set this up I was trying to RIP a
subnet for which I had a secondary IP address set up on that same interface.
It just does not work (which actually makes sense) but I beat my head on it
for a couple of days.
Hope this helps!

One way if you have TCM is from File, Save configuration. That will save
it on that computer. Make sure you write down the name of the file you
save it to.

This is a filter issue, you can block complete access to napster by just using
a filter. If you know what the user is going send and know the exact offset of
that data then you can setup a generic filter.

Hello Group,
I have been working on setting up OSPF on our TCH chassis (HARC 4.2.32-1)
and have it working partly. A static subnet customer can dialup and his IP
(from the dialup machine) does show up in the routing tables and he can get
out from there, but all of his machines behind that gateway machine cannot.
I believe this is due to not having an "ospf sendpolicy" enabled, I did set
one up ie;
"add ospf sendpolicy xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/29 source local action advertise"
We have not yet tested this new entry yet, however my question is, is this
necessary and do we have to add a sendpolicy for every dialup subnet we handle?
Or can we just add a sendpolicy for each netblock (class c) we maintain and
let the system add the routes for the dialup networks?

Subject:(usr-tc) TC 1000 software upgrade question From: Joe S. Rinehart <joe@config.com> Date: 2000-11-15 18:45:27
Hello 3Com Guru's,
I'm debating an upgrade of our TC 1000 Software, but thought I'd
ask...since, if it ain't broke....
We are mostly satisfied with the performance of our existing
software, excepting a rare reboot of a circuit which I've not been able to
explain.
Is there any real benefit by upgrading the HiperArc software to 5.09 from
4.2.32?

I found it by going to the 5400 site and clicking on competitive upgrades.
We are currently sticking with the 3Com as the last issue of code, including
the unreleased HiperArc engineering release has resolved a great majority of
our problems. We only have a couple of clients with 'terminal' (pun
intended) connection problems, and I think they are not upgrading their
modem code because their computers come from 'reputable' manufacturers so it
must be my fault, yada yada yada.
The support issues are still there though we were able to get a decent deal
on the software update license. I haven't yet gotten a quote on phone
support only but I hear that is supposed to be a new option available to us.

Manually select the files to fill in there (right click on it maybe?
been a while since I've used tcm), then tell it to go. The NMC will
basically force feed the code to the card. If the code is correct for
the card, it will work fine.
Since the card is non-responsive, the NMC can't query it to find out
what type of card it is in order to find out what code to use, so you
have to manually choose which files to feed it.

I notice you guys are talking about Cisco Upgrades. They are always buying
ports of other manufactures for credit towards purchases. Depending on the
Manufacture rates per port vary. I have 100's or Cabletron and Bay Networks
ports available for trade-in. I can assure you my price to you and the
trade in credit from Cisco will work in your favor.
Anyone looking to go that route with Cisco please contact me.

he's right.
I *DID* have to do this.
(Forgot.)
So, select 1 modem. find out what files it uses. Fill in the blanks, for
the dead one.
Shove that code down the modem's throat.
Away you go!

Hi all. I'm looking for a source of info on an old Quad Chassis that I
have laying around. We have two versions of quads that I've found and the
newer chassis has a Netserver PRI card, a NMC card and a combination of
digital and analog quad modems. This one I'm OK with. The other one
takes individual analog lines and has some analog modem cards with QAV34
on the front and some Cisco cards in there too. This is the one that I'm
looking for info on. Basically, I'm wondering how the calls are routed
out of the chassis. I'm assuming that the calls come in to the modem
cards and go out through the Cisco cards to a hub or router. Does anyone
know anything about these?
Thanks

Do you have a URL for that handy? I've been searching around the
Cisco site and haven't found it yet.
Also, is anyone using Ericsson Tigris gear? If so, what do you think?
We need to buy a new RAS soon and will probably go with another
TC with a full house of cards, since we have so much ofit already,
but do want to eval other products as well.
We're evaluating an Ericsson 3-slot model right now and my feeling
so far is that while I like the HARC CLI better, I could get used
to the Ericsson. We have not had a connection failure with any
ISDN or modem test so far, and ISDN authentication is lightning-fast.
On the downside, Ericsson doesn't have an equivalent of Total
Control Manager. It does come with a more generalized MIB
browser with some monitoring capability (Riverview/SNMPc), but
this seems a far cry from TC in terms of the functionality it
provides.
I'm kind of kicking around the idea of getting a non-TC product
at this juncture partly so that we have someplace for customers
to go (other than our competitors) if they have modems that
don't play nice with TC.
If anybody is using Ericsson or Cisco, I'd be very happy to hear
your opinion and real-world experiences with them.

That sounds like a Cisco AS5100, basically Cisco licensed the original
total control chassis, but instead of a NETServer card, stuck several
AS51's (essentially 2511's in a form factor to fit the TC chassis...only
pulls power from the chassis) in it.
The calls come in on individual analog lines to the modem cards, then
out of the modem cards on the "hydra" serial port at the top of the NIC
card over to the AS51's, which serve as the access server. Then it
comes out of the AS51's as ethernet, like a normal 2511 would. I think
it was set up to have 4 analog quad cards connecting to an AS51 (16
ports per AS51), which leaves you room enough for 3 of these combos in a
chassis with an NMC and an extra slot left over.
Electronically, the chassis is fully a TC chassis, so you could take
DSP's and Arcs and such and plug them in and they should work
fine...just keep in mind the limitations of the older chassis in
bandwidth and tdm slots and the like...I think they max out at 5 DSP's.

Subject:(usr-tc) routing through second Ethernet port on HiperArc From: USRobotics TC Mailing List <usroboticstcmailinglist@imagenisp.com> Date: 2000-11-16 19:01:26
I've searched through my archive of the TC list for the last year, the
documentation and the 3Com support site, but haven't been able to find an
answer to my question.
I would like to assign a different subnet to a couple of my DSP's and have
them go out through the second Ethernet port on my ARC.
Is this possible?
If so, can someone either help me out, or point me in the right direction.
Thanks much.

A little. At ISPCON, Source-Tech claimed it would be a free upgrade,
requiring the TCS 4.xxx code. Quad-HiPer DSPs and HiPer DSPs will use
it... Quad modems are SOL. That's about the extent.
I was amazed by the equipment 3Com brought to ISPCON. The TC2000 platform
was incredible... supports like 52,000 lines max over a 6 chassis setup...
too bad it won't do dial up for at least a year yet... Oh, and will cost
as much as the space shuttle.
> Have any announcements been made by 3Com?
Few. Source-Technologies is sounding off about V.92 on the TCs.
> What's your opinion of V.92? Will you need to support it?
Sure, we'll support it... but only if it is an effortless upgrade.
We're willing to pay the money to upgrade the TCS, and were probably going
to phase out the Quad Modems someday, anyway... but we will do it at our
convience. We've had 0 requests.

That's funny, we just moved into a colo that has a GIANT AOL dialup. Lots
of the ANS "BigDial" racks stacked to the gills with old chassis full of
quads. Probably at least 30 racks of *quad only* TC hubs. Perhaps once
AOL users start pushing for v.92, we'll see some movement on the quad
code. Or maybe AOL is trying to decide between upgrading to DSPs or just
moving to another platform, and this will help them decide.
Mindspring's setup is amazing. Probably just as many lines (1 T3 for
every 2 chassis, 6 chassis/rack) but far less space. They have a
portmaster at the bottom of each rack with a console cable running into
*every* dsp. Very neat setup.

Cool to look at, but I regularly visit a number of colo centers with lots
of dial equipment... Remember Lucent's big push on the PM-4 or whatever
that gigantic expensive thing they had was?? I've yet to see one
anywhere, but I see plenty of TCs, even more TNTs, and a smattering of
that beige Nortel junk. Prediction...? 3Com sells 10 of them and their
stock continues to sputter along on LAN card and switch sales.

I'm most interested in v.59, really... from what little I've heard it
sounds like it'll be a big win for the helpdesk folks. Anyone got *real*
details on what it entails? (Probably difficult if it hasn't been ratified.)

It's an SNMP-like protocol that allows the device to be polled for

I've seen some PM4's in production around Detroit. Dunno what good they would be
since they've been EOL'ed, same with the PM3 now. Any bugs in the code are locked
in, they just threw out a new release last week, announced end of life on the PM3
and shut down production last Friday. So I guess any ISP using a PM3 won't be seeing
V.92.
I wouldn't touch a piece of Lucent gear or any of that goofy junk I get postcards on
with a 10 foot pole. I've had a very good experience with my USR equipment since I
upgraded everything to HiPer.

Do both ends have to support v.59 or if the user does then you can

Make sure your HiPer Arc's date is set correctly. To
do this type 'show date' without the ticks.. Output
should look like this...

I guess If I was reading this correctly I would have seen that it's
a NetServer/16. Sorry about that. I would still double check
the date config, that could be causing the weird accounting
info.

(I got your reply in the usr-tc digest...)
* That's ok. I'm not even sure what the difference is there :-)
The hardware is in the country of Bolvia. There are a couple
TC's around our sites, but mostly we are a Lucent shop (for now
anyway). So I'm still confused over what's a Netserver and what's
a HiperARC. (I'm just telnetting to these things ;-)
Anyway they tell me Total Control. But as you saw, the "system"
command did output something about NetServer/16. I'm still
baffled ... we've got another one elsewhere, where the prompt
is actually HiPER>. This one our crew in Bolivia may have changed
the prompt. Their prompt is actually "IFXSucre>" but I didn't
want to broadcast too much details over a non-secure channel such
as a mailing list.
Anyway the date was off by over a week, and the time was god knows
whom's time zone ... so I set them both a little closer to US Eastern.
We shall see if that makes any difference. Geeze! I'd think our
guys would have at least set the date correctly! Oh what a life...
THANK YOU VERY MUCH ... thanks fer the heads-up!!!!!!! :-)

I guess If I was reading this correctly I would have seen that it's
a NetServer/16. Sorry about that. I would still double check
the date config, that could be causing the weird accounting
info.

Subject:(usr-tc) Quad Modem Alarms From: D. W. Piper <dwplists@loop.com> Date: 2000-11-17 13:53:43
I've searched through the 3Com documentation, online knowledgebase, etc.
for information or help on this without success.
The symptoms:
- customers complain about experiencing busy signals, and/or RNA, and/or
dead air;
- we discover that one of the quad modems on the relevant chassis is
showing a flashing red LED when a call comes in;
- resetting the modem using TCM generally resolves the problem.
The questions:
What causes this to occur? Is there any way to test for this situation
(perhaps using Alarm Server, if there's any trap setting that would
detect this kind of problem) sooner, before we have irate customers
calling in to complain?
Thanks for any help,
David

I have a need to busy out some T1's that have no DSP cards on them
anymore, but I do have a few old T1 cards sitting here.
Was thinking of popping them in, then just setting them to busy out all
DS0's, and plug the T1's into that.
Will this work?

Anyone know if the 3Com TC will also support V.44 (beside V.92), a better
compression rate (25% more) than V.42 bis?

Interesting to know so many standard. So what is V.59 for?
V.92 - 40Kbps upstream, Modem on hold (while call waiting) & Fast Connect
(at least faster than V.90)
V.44 - 25% more compression than V.42bis, i.e. faster data throughput
V.59 - ??

I once had to take it 1 step further. I used 14 dual T1 cards and nics in
a chassis with a CAC Widebank 28 DS-3 Mux zip tied to the top to busy out a
DS3 full of CT1 trunks when we were moving our POP last year.
Works great. Be sure to check your clocking settings and master/slave mode
on the cards if you're using multiple T1 NAC's in a chassis.

Subject:(usr-tc) Concurrency Problem in Security and Accounting Software ??? From: Tabellione Sebastian <chipi@intercom.com.ar> Date: 2000-11-18 12:49:05
Hi, I have 1 TC and Im using S.A.S. 6.0.83...
The problem :
The Security and Accounting software not getting or not recordingdisconnects
properly.
It is an intermittent problem. What happensis that the software will record
someone connecting but when the disconnect is missed, the software will
still show a connection yet a check of the NAS shows the caller hung up.
Thus the caller will call back in and won't get authenticated because the
software says they have reached their limit on connections.
What can I do ???
The problem is de SAS or the TC ???
Regards.
Sebastian (Argentine)
Howdy,
Are these on a HiPer or NetServer? What SW version? PRI or CT1?
I don't know about trap settings, but if you use snmpwalk to take a look
at the following MIBs, you should get the status:
#ds0-level items (PRI/T1 card only)
$oid_ds0_stat=".iso.org.dod.internet.private.enterprises.usr.nas.ds0.ds0StatTable.d
s0StatEntry.ds0StatDs0";
$oid_ds0_statmodem=".iso.org.dod.internet.private.enterprises.usr.nas.ds0.ds0StatTa
ble.ds0StatEntry.ds0StatModem";
I'm sorry I don't have the numeric OID's, this box has all the USR MIBs
loaded up. This is a snippet from a general TC health monitor we put
together. When I get the symptoms you describe, the modem status shows
"modem busy out". We are running CT1's and ARCs, and this problem did not
appear until an upgrade of the Hiper software to 4.2.32...
Just putting together a perl script that walks those snmp values once a
day and mails you the output should be enough to alert you to problems
before customers start to complain.
As to the root cause, I have no idea; we don't have a support contract so
I can't open a ticket. Something in the HiPer code broke it though, as
this started as soon as we upgraded the Arc.
If anyone knows the OIDs to reset channels on the quads, that would be
great. I'd love to have my script do this rather than having to fire up
TCM. If anyone is curious about my monitoring script, let me know. It's
very ugly as it was one of my first perl projects. I need to basically
rewrite it to use the perl snmp module...

Just my two cents, whatever that may actually be worth...
We currently use SAS as well, and the problem is in dropped Accounting=20
packets, caused by either or both hardware/software. That is the=20
unfortunate mishap of concurrency control done totally in this manner.=20
Because of this, we only enable concurrency control during "peak" usage=
hours.
We have started testing Cistron Radius on Linux, which initially uses=20
Accounting packets for concurrency checking, however it does a=20
"double-check" by using Telnet or SNMP (depending on the NAS) to match the=
=20
user name against the Accounting data. This seems much more reliable, and=
=20
rather than making the mistake of rejecting a valid login, it can make the=
=20
mistake of allowing a concurrent login from time to time, which in my book=
=20
is much more desirable than the other.
Cistron also has a number of other useful features as well, and it's=20
free! http://www.miquels.cistron.nl/radius/

Boy, I sure feel ignorant now. I guess I'm concerned about needing to use
both ethernet ports to help load balance the data going to my switch. I
really don't know what the effect on impact would be , if any, of using 2
ports instead of one.

Nah, not necessary. Those are 10/100 ports. You'd need to have 178 users
online simultaneously at a full 56K all downloading at the same time to eat
up one 10Mb port.

I haven't had any luck trying to add a second network. It keeps
telling me
that the new ip address is being used by the other network. When I do
a:
"sho ip network workgroup" I get:
SHOW IP NETWORK workgroup SETTINGS:
Interface: eth:1
Network Address: 199.108.167.9/C
Frame Type: ETHERNET_II
Status: ENABLED
Reconfigure Needed: FALSE
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Station: 199.108.167.9
Broadcast Algorithm: IETF
Max Reassembly Size: 8192
WAN Type: N/A
Remote IP Address: 0.0.0.0
IP Routing Protocols:
OSPF
IP Routing Metric: 1
RIP Interface Export Metric: 0
IP RIP Routing Policies:
IP RIP Authentication Key:
Is the "/C" on the network address preventing me from adding another?
Thanks for your help.

Hum.... I think... try changing the netmask to /32 if bboth
interfaces are in same network. And use sortlist in DNS in order to
distrubute the incomming traffic.

I never ran the numbers, so I think you are right. I just have noticed a
slowness in my local ethernet when things are busy, so I'm looking for
things to try.
Thanks for the response.

We have a group of clients using Impact IQs that are getting
stalled ISDN connections. I seem to remember a thread on this but
couldn't locate it in my three years of usr-tc list archives.
We're running hdsp 2.0.60 and harc 4.2.32

I have heard, unofficially, that 3Com will support v.92 in the TC
sometime around February to April of next year. It probably will not
be supported on the quad modems. I have no idea if there will be a
charge for the upgrade or if it will be covered by the service
contracts (it should be, IMHO).
I think customers are going to want this. What they'll want the
most is the Call Waiting feature that allows them to "save" the
modem connection while they take a call. It will be interesting to
see how we ISPs handle this. It's up to the ISP to determine how
long we wait for them to come back.
The upload speed of 48k is probably not reachable. And even if it
is, there is some debate about its effect on the download speed.
Heh, I was about to recommend going to the v.unreliable site for
more information and then I looked at who I was replying to. :-)

A useful implementation would allow us to specify the maximum hold time
allowed by the V.92 protocol before the call is dropped. Then we could set
it for 5 minutes or something like that, independent of the idle timeout.
What happens to tcpip sessions in progress when the line goes on hold? Is
the TCH going to keep the connection with servers alive so that everything
starts working again when the perp gets off hold, or is the customer going
to call us and be ticked that their favorite game session timed them out?

I've found that the online gamers are usually sophisticated enough to know
that if they take a phone call during a game and thus become inactive,
they'll probably get "killed" by another player before any timeout would be
a problem. Heck, I'd bet that they turn off call waiting and don't even go
to the bathroom during a game.

I guess you could sell it as a premuim service, but you would need to
break the v.92 and v.90 pools into seperate chassis/huntgroups unless

I don't see this as a good thing. How can you improve your service (ie

Every ISP uses idle timeouts and has a written interactive use policy to
stop the very thing that v.92 is going to make available. The only GOOD
thing about the v.92 is that from what I understand the hold feature can
be turned off on our side.

Actually, there's a little more that's good: V.92 allows 3 options for client for call waiting - Modem-On-Hold (which you need to have enabled as well), HangUp, and Ignore. I can't tell you how many people have asked me how to make their modems hang up when they have a call waiting. Instead, they're on line, probably retraining to boot.
The proposed V.250 commands I just put up at http://808hi.com/56k/v92c.htm show you the increments you can allow for modem-on-hold.
Could be a good thing.
V.44 should help as well.... better throughput ultimately = shorter sessions...?

I don't know about session length, but we currently have about an equal
number of dialup ports and DSL "ports". Average traffic to DSL is only
about 1.5X greater than the traffic to our modem pools. Wide open pipes
under 30% utilization all-around...
Strange, but true...

Clayton,
While I appreciate the breaker info, the real question is how many amps does
it draw - that way I know if I am going to have a breaker issue or not. All
the Telect panels are all tied back to a real breaker panel that has 15-30a
breakers (depending on the guessed load).

Short answer: you can't.
Long answer: GMT fuses, although available up to 15 Amps, are generally
not used in applications above 10 amps - you start running into fuseholder
constraints, etc.
You should really be using either KTK or NRN style fuses, or better yet,
breaker panels. See www.argus.ca - they make a nice selection of DC breakers.
We use a model from Telect also with an a/b fuse split with a mix of 4 GMT
and 4 KTK per side.

We have kept a small number of pots lines in some of our towns connected to
a USR netserver 16. We have some that have difficulty connecting or
staying connected to the TC units and they seem satisfied with the
NS16. Pots lines cost us lots more per month these days but it has worked
well for us.

One of our POPs has 6 TC shelfs with 10 DSP's each. The TC shelfs plus all
the ancilliary optical and routing gear draws 90 amps or so from our DC
supply. Most of the other pieces of equipment's draw doesn't amount to a
whole heck of a lot, so lets assume the TC's draw around 70 amps of this.
That would bring the consumption per shelf to around 11 amps. Remember,
that there is inrush current when powering the units up, plus you may want
a bit of a safety margin on top of it to avoid false trips, etc. It really
looks like its outside of the GMT range, or at least pushing the limit on
the higher end of the GMT range, particularly in the case of a failure of
one of the power feeds if you're running load sharing supplies.
We breaker our TC's at 25 A
The only real way to measure it of course is to place a fixed value shunt
in line with DC supply, and measure the voltage drop across it, and
calcuate the current draw.

I finally got around to finishing the "passive-interface" thing and it really
helped! From 50 to 60 percent down to 10 to 15 percent. Excellent!
Thanks a ton Jeff.

Actually there is a fix for this if you are using PRI lines OR you have gotten your phone company to provide you with DNIS. I can't
get DNIS so I'm screwed!
In Total Control Manager, you can set different init strings to be sent to the modem for different incoming phone numbers (up to
four different ones). So ask your phone company to give you two additional phone numbers pointed to the trunk group and set one of
those to init the modem to 33.6k only connects and another to 19.2k only connects.

We have a small number of people that, for whatever reason, have a tough time
connecting to the Total Control. I'd like to pick up another access server
that might allow us to connect a majority of these people having difficulties
without spending all day playing with modem init strings. So I guess I am
looking for the "Anti-Total Control". I'd also like something where we may be
able to pick up some functionality that may be lacking in the TC, or where we
may find lower long term costs compared to those associated with the TC. I
don't want something that is dead-ended.
I'm familiar with the Livingston stuff as we used to run them (and I used to
like them) but I don't think that would be a good longer term decision. I've
heard that the Ascend gear is very popular and can connect to a wide variety of
modems. So perhaps a used Ascend may be in order. Also, I've been looking
into the Ariel RS4200 which appears pretty nice, but I can't seem to find
anyone that has run one of these things outside of through Ariel.
Thanks up front for any suggestions.

* I set the time and date, and our Radius System Administrator still
tells me that we continue to get rediculously large Acct-Session-Time in
accounting packets. Anyone have any other ideas? Thanks...
Should we upgrade something? are we missing some conversion or dictionary
for Radius ? Is this a bug????

I guess If I was reading this correctly I would have seen that it's
a NetServer/16. Sorry about that. I would still double check
the date config, that could be causing the weird accounting
info.
