Netopia Firmware Archive

This page catalogs the archived firmware (.bin) files for Netopia modems, gateways, and routers. Information is reconstructed from the original Netopia firmware download page and upgrade instructions (via the Wayback Machine).

Firmware File Naming Convention

Netopia firmware filenames encode the platform, version, and variant:

Version numbers are encoded in the filename. For example: n850r1.bin = version 8.5.0 R1, nir539R4.bin = version 5.3.9 R4, nir4113.bin = version 4.11.3.

Enterprise Series Firmware (n prefix)

For 33xx-ENT gateways and 4xxx/46xx routers.

Consumer / Lite Series Firmware (nl prefix)

For 33xx non-Enterprise (consumer) gateways.

R-Series & 4000 Series Firmware (nir prefix)

For R-Series routers (R-910, R-9100, R5300, R2020, etc.) and 4000 Series.

SBC / AT&T Telco Variant Firmware (nta prefix)

For SBC/AT&T-branded Netopia gateways (e.g. 3346N-002).

Belgacom Telco Variant Firmware (ntb prefix)

WAN Daughtercard Firmware

These files upgrade the WAN module on specific router models, not the main router firmware.

Warnings and Cautions

• CAUTION: Before upgrading an Enterprise Gateway running firmware 8.0.10 or earlier to v8.4.2 R0 or later, you must first upgrade to 8.2 R1 (nir82R1.bin). Failure to do so may cause the router to malfunction.
• WARNING: If you have a 3300 Series Smart Modem running firmware 6.3.0 R9 or earlier, DO NOT attempt to load new firmware. Any attempt may result in hardware failure not covered under warranty.
• CAUTION: Reverting to an older version of firmware is NOT supported. It can result in unpredictable behavior or hardware failure not covered under warranty.
• R-910 Serial Number Note: R-910 routers with serial numbers below #11171916 use 4.x firmware and CANNOT be upgraded to 8.x. Routers at or above that serial number MUST run 8.x firmware.
• 4541 Note: After upgrading a model 4541 router, it may take up to five minutes to reboot. Do not interrupt this process.
• AURP is last supported in firmware v4.8.2.
• LocalTalk to EtherTalk is last supported in firmware v4.8.4.
• There is a significant password access change after upgrading to 4.11+ (R-Series) or 5.3.4+ (4000 Series).

Upgrade Instructions

This guide applies to Netopia Enterprise Series, 4000 Series, and R-Series gateways and routers. Before upgrading, confirm with your service provider that the newer firmware version is supported on their network. Save a written copy of your configuration or a configuration file backup before upgrading.

Method 1: TFTP File Transfer (via Telnet)

Requires internet access and a valid, routable WAN IP address on the router. If your ISP uses non-routable WAN IPs (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x–172.31.x.x), use the Xmodem method instead.

1. Verify your computer's IP address is on the same Ethernet subnet as the router. (Unconfigured R-Series routers default to 192.168.1.1 / 255.255.255.0.)
2. Establish a Telnet session:
   • Windows: Start → Run → type telnet <router IP> → OK
   • Mac: Use NCSA Telnet (from Netopia CD) → File → Open Connection → enter router IP → Connect
3. Initiate the TFTP transfer:

   Main Menu
     → Quick Menus
       → TFTP

   • TFTP Server Name: tftp.netopia.com
   • Firmware File Name: enter the appropriate .bin filename (e.g. n850.bin)
   • Select "Get Router Firmware From Server" and "Continue"
4. Watch the "TFTP Current Transfer Bytes" count increase. If it fails with a DNS error, verify the DNS server configuration in the router.
5. When complete, all lights will flash for ~30 seconds and the router will restart. Re-establish your Telnet session to verify the new firmware version on the Main Menu.

For WAN daughtercard upgrades (R2020, R6100, R7200): enter the daughtercard firmware filename (e.g. 6100-113.bin or 7200-118.bin) and select "Get Wan Module Firmware From Server" instead.

Method 2: Xmodem File Transfer (via Serial Console)

Requires a serial console cable (DB-9 to DB-9) and a terminal emulator (HyperTerminal, ZTerm, etc.). Download the firmware .bin file to the computer you will connect from.

1. Power off the router.
2. Connect the serial console cable between the router's console port and your computer's COM port.
3. Configure your terminal emulator:

   Bits per second: 9600
   Data bits:       8
   Parity:          None
   Stop bits:       1
   Flow control:    None

4. Power on the router. The Main Menu should appear within a few seconds. (If not, press Ctrl+L or Enter to refresh.)
5. Initiate the Xmodem transfer:

   Main Menu
     → Quick Menus
       → PC Card/Xmodem

   • Select "Send Firmware To Netopia" (or "Send Firmware to Netopia Wan Module" for daughtercard upgrades)
   • Select "Continue"
6. You have 10 seconds to start the file transfer from your terminal program:
   • HyperTerminal: Transfer → Send File → Protocol: Xmodem → Browse to the .bin file
7. When complete, all lights will flash for ~30 seconds and the router will restart.

Under no circumstances should you interrupt the firmware upgrade process. Every firmware release includes changes that may cause configuration corruption, requiring a factory reset. As a precaution, always save a backup of your configuration before upgrading.
