Discovering devices on a network

The topology discovery process begins when you supply Optivity Switch Manager with one or more network device seed addresses and the application queries the addresses. The Preferences dialog box specifies the seed address and defines the scope of the discovery process.

To discover a network:

  1. From the Optivity Switch Manager menu bar, choose Edit > Preferences.
  2. The Preferences dialog box opens.
  3. In the Seed Address(es) textbox, type the IP address of one or more devices in the network.
  4. Separate multiple IP addresses with commas.
  5. In the MaxHops textbox, type the maximum number of hops.
  6. Use the Layout slider to indicate whether greater speed or better accuracy is more important.
  7. Select other options in the dialog box to control the appearance of the topology map.
  8. See Preferences dialog box for a description of the options available.
  9. Click Apply.
  10. Click OK.
  11. On the Optivity Switch Manager toolbar, click Discover Map.
  12. Or, from the Optivity Switch Manager menu bar, choose Actions > Discover Map.
  13. An alert box opens to advise you that the submanagers must be reloaded, and to prompt whether you want to continue.
  1. Click Yes to proceed.
  2. Optivity Switch Manager reloads topology information from the network devices, and refreshes the topology map with it.
