User-defined protocols in protocol-based VLANs

You can create protocol-based VLANs with a user-defined protocol for integration into existing networks where nonstandard protocols are used.

To set user-defined protocols:

  1. From the Device Manager menu bar, choose VLAN > VLANs.
  2. The VLAN dialog box opens with the Basic tab displayed.
  3. In the Basic tab, click Insert.
  4. The VLAN, Insert Basic dialog box opens.
  5. In the Type field, select byProtocolId.
  6. The VLAN, Insert Basic dialog box displays additional fields needed to set up protocol-based VLANs.
  7. In the ProtocolId field, select usrDefined.
  8. The VLAN, Insert Basic dialog box displays additional fields.
  9. In the UserDefinedPid field, type the PID of the protocol in the format: 0x (protocol type in hexadecimal value). The 16-bit PID assigned to a protocol-based VLAN specifies either an Ethertype, a DSAP/SSAP, or a SNAP PID, depending on whether the frame encapsulation is Ethernet 2, 802.2, or LLC-SNAP, respectively.

Refer to the section on user-defined protocols in Networking Concepts for the Passport 1000 Series Switch, Release 2.0 for more information about this topic and to see the actual values and how they are assigned.

The following PIDs are not valid:
