Policing is the process of assigning a traffic rate to a microflow or aggregate flow as it traverses the DiffServ network. The microflow or aggregate flow is evaluated against defined traffic profiles. When a traffic profile is in effect, it checks each packet for the average rate. If the rate is within the value defined in the profile (that is, the packet is "in profile"), the packets are marked with the in-profile DSCP. If the rate exceeds the defined value, the packets either are marked with the out-of-profile DSCP or are discarded, based on the action defined in the traffic profile.
The following section describes how to configure a traffic profile.
