VLAN

A VLAN is a collection of ports on one or more switches that defines a broadcast domain. You can assign ports to a VLAN or you can create a policy VLAN, that determines the port's membership in the VLAN based on the traffic entering that port. For example, in a IP subnet-based VLAN, the port belongs to the VLAN only if the traffic passing through the port is on the IP subnet specified.

You controll path redundancy for VLANs by implementing the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP).
