Configuring SNMP communities
|
Note:
You can create or update SNMP community strings only if you open the switch using a read-write access community string (by default, the string is "private" for read-write). For example, to open a switch using a read-write access community string, choose Device > Open. Enter "private" for the Read Community and "private" for the Write Community. The string private appears as *******.
If you do not open a device using a read-write access community string, you can only view the SNMP Community tab, and CommunityString is displayed as **** for the entry (for example, private) with read-write access.
|
You can create up to four SNMP community strings1 for the SNMP management host, and specify the strings as having read-only or read-write privileges.
- read-only--allows read-only access to the switch's SNMP agent. The default read-only community string is public.
- read-write--allows read and write access to the switch's SNMP agent. The default read-write community string is private.
To configure SNMP community strings:
- From the Device Manager menu bar, choose Edit > Security.
| The Security dialog box opens with the SNMP Community tab displayed. |
- Click Insert.
| The Security, Insert SNMP Community dialog box opens. |
- In the Security, Insert SNMP Community dialog box, enter a community string name (up to 32 alphanumeric characters).
- In the CommunityLevel field, select the appropriate read/write privilege.
- Click Insert.
| The new community string appears in the Security dialog box--SNMP Community tab. |
