Two levels of spanning trees

An STG is a collection of ports that belong to the same instance of an STP. Multiple STGs are possible within the same switch; that is, the routing switch can participate in the negotiation for multiple spanning trees.

The 1600 Series switch STP allows you to configure two levels of spanning trees. The first level constructs a spanning tree on the links between switches. This is referred to as the Switch or Global level. The second level is on a port group basis. You configure groups of ports as members of a spanning tree and the algorithm and protocol are applied to the group of ports. This is referred to as the Port or VLAN level.
