Creating default IP routes

The default route is used to specify a route to all networks for which there are no explicit routes in the Forwarding Information Base or the routing table. This route is a route with the prefix length of zero (RFC1812). The routing switches can be configured with the default route statically, or they can learn it through a dynamic routing protocol.

For more information about viewing and managing IP routes, see Networking Concepts for the Passport 1424T Switch.

To create a default IP route:

  1. From the Device Manager menu bar, choose IP Routing > IP.
  2. The IP dialog box opens with the Globals tab displayed.
  3. Click the Routes tab.
  4. The Routes tab opens.
  5. Click Insert.
  6. The IP, Insert Routes dialog box opens.
  7. In the Dest box, type the IP address.
  8. In the Mask box, type the mask.
  9. In the NextHop box, type the IP address of the router through which the specified route is accessible.
  10. In the HopOrMetric box, type the metric value.
  11. Click Insert.
  12. The route appears in the routing table.
