UDP is a well-known "connectionless" protocol that requires no connection setup. This is important for multicast traffic, which cannot tolerate the overhead and latency of TCP.
UDP uses port numbers in a way that is directly analogous to TCP. There are well-known UDP port numbers for servers that use UDP.
