Creating a port-based VLAN

Device Manager lets you create a port-based or protocol-based VLAN.

Note Note: After a VLAN is created, you cannot change the VLAN type. The VLAN must be deleted and a new VLAN of the chosen type created.

To create a port-based VLAN:

  1. From the Device Manager menu bar, choose VLAN > VLANs.
  2. The VLAN dialog box opens.
  3. Click Insert.
  4. The Insert Basic dialog box for creating VLANs opens. This dialog box opens with the Type field set to byPort.
  5. Type the VLAN ID.
  6. The value can be from 1 to 4094, as long as it is not already in use. (The default VLAN has a VID=1.)
  7. Type the VLAN name (optional).
  8. If no name is entered, a default name is created.
  9. Enter a color ID for the VLAN (optional).
  10. Use the StgId menu to choose the Spanning Tree group to which the VLAN is to belong.
  11. In the Type field, click byPort if not already selected.
  12. In the ConstraintType field, click independent or shared..

Note Note: In independent VLAN learning (IVL) mode, each VLAN uses an unique forwarding database. In shared VLAN learning (SVL) mode, multiple VLANs use a single forwarding database. IVL is not supported in Hybrid Stack Operational mode.
The hybrid stack mode is not supported in this release of the BayStack 460-24T-PWR switch.

  13. Click Insert.
  14. The system returns you to the VLAN Basic tab.
  15. Double-click on the Port Member field.
  16. The Port Members dialog box opens.
  17. Click the ports you want in the VLAN..

Note Note: You can add ports that are also members of other VLANs within the same STG. However, you cannot add ports that are members of a VLAN that is within a different STG.

  18. Click Ok.
