Opening a device
"Opening" a device displays the device view, a picture of the device. To open the device view, you must enter community strings that determine the access level granted to the device.

To display the device view:
- Do one of the following:
- Choose Device > Open.
- Choose Device > Open Last, and select an IP address from the list.
- Click the folder icon in the Device Manager window.
- Press [Ctrl] + O.

Device Name
|
Either an IP address or a DNS name for the device, entered by the user.

Read Community
|
SNMP read community string for the device. Default is public (displayed as ******). The entry is case-sensitive.

Write Community
|
SNMP write community string for the device. Default is private (displayed as *******).The entry is case-sensitive.

- In the Device Name text box, type the DNS name or IP address of the device.
- In the Read Community and Write Community text boxes, type the proper community strings.

Note:
To gain Read-Write-All access to a device in Device Manager, you must enter the Read-Write-All community string for both the Read Community and Write Community strings.

- Click Open.
| Device Manager automatically determines what version of software the selected device is running and displays the appropriate Device Manager dialog boxes. |
