Controlling access to the CLI

Configuring and Managing SecurityIn addition, the Passport 8000 Series switch software release 3.5, community strings are stored in encrypted format and are no longer stored in the configuration file. See Configuring and Managing Security for more information on SNMP community string encryption.

If you have read/write/all access authority, you can use Device Manager to change the passwords for access to the CLI through a console or Telnet session. You can change passwords that are in encrypted format when using SNMPv3 only. If you do not have read/write/all privileges, the user name and password fields will be blank.


Note Note: You no longer have to reboot the switch for your telnet ID settings to take effect.

The CLI tab allows you to specify the number of allowed Telnet sessions and rlogin sessions. To prohibit Telnet or rlogin access to the switch, specify zero (0) as the number of allowed sessions.

To change passwords for access to the CLI:

  1. From the Device Manager menu bar, choose Edit > Security.
  2. The Security dialog box opens with the Access Policies tab displayed.
  3. Click the CLI tab.
  4. The CLI tab opens.


Note Note: When you access the switch with DM using the public,private community string, the fields in the Security dialog box appear blank. To see what UserName ise configured, you must log onto the switch using the secret,secret community string.
