Creating a protocol-based VLAN

To create a protocol-based VLAN:

  1. From the Device Manager menu bar, choose VLAN > VLANs.
  2. The VLAN dialog box opens with the Basis tab displayed.
  3. In the Basic tab, click Insert.
  4. Set the Type field to byProtocolId.
  5. Type the unique VLAN ID.
  6. Type the VLAN name (optional).
  7. If no name is entered, a default is created.
  8. Select the color (optional).
  9. Device Manager suggests a color, but you can change it. This color is used to display the different VLANs in a network.
  10. Select the spanning tree group ID of the VLAN.
  11. Specify the port membership by clicking the PortMembers, StaticMembers, or NotAllowedToJoin ellipsis button. For protocol types: byIpSubnet, byProtocolid, and bySrcMac use the PortMember ellipsis button.
  12. The appropriate dialog box opens.
  13. In the VlanPortMembers dialog boxclick each port button until the color representing the desired membership color is visible; then click OK.
  14. Select the protocolID.
  15. Specify the AgingTime (the timeout period in seconds for aging out the dynamic member ports of the VLAN) or use the default of 600 seconds.
  16. This option is relevant only to the Passport 8600 modules.
  17. Select the QosLevel.
  18. Type the DsField.
  19. This option is relevant only to the Passport 8600 modules.
  20. In the VLAN, Insert Basic dialog box, click Insert.
  21. If you are using a Passport 8600 module, on the VLAN Basic tab, highlight the newly created VLAN and do one of the following:
