Access ports

Implementation of DiffServ happens primarily at the access ports. Filtering and traffic profiles are set up to operate at the access ports, where packets are marked for handling within the DiffServ network. A packet's IP header contains a field called the DiffServ or DS field, which contains the DS codepoint (DSCP) and identifies a class of service for the packet. Additionally, IEEE 802.1Q tagged packets have an IEEE 802.1p bit that also identifies a class of service.

Based on traffic filters assigned to the access port, the packet's DSCP or IEEE 802.1p bit could be reset or remain unchanged. At the DS access port, the packet is assigned a QoS level based on different criteria.
