Creating a Protocol-Based VLAN

To create a protocol-based VLAN:

  1. From the Device Manager menu bar, choose VLAN > VLANs > Basic, and click Insert.
  2. The VLAN, Insert Basic dialog box opens.
  3. Change the Type field to byProtocol.
  4. Enter the VLAN ID number or accept the one automatically assigned.
  5. Type the VLAN name (optional).
  6. If no name is entered, a default is created.
  7. Select the VLAN color (optional).
  8. Device Manager suggests a color, but you can change it.
  9. Select the Spanning Tree Group ID of the VLAN.
  10. In the StaticMembers field, select the ports that will be static members of the VLAN.
  11. In the NotAllowToJoin field, select the ports that cannot be part of the IP subnet-based VLAN.
  12. Select the protocolID.

If you are entering a UserDefined protocol, see the explanation under "User-defined protocols in protocol-based VLANs."

  1. Specify the Aging Time (the timeout period in seconds for aging out the dynamic member ports of the VLAN) or use the default of 600 seconds.
  2. Click on the HighPriority box if you want traffic from this VLAN to be tagged High Priority.
  3. Click Insert.
  4. In the edit VLANs Basic window, highlight the newly created VLAN and do one of the following:
  5. · For IP protocol VLANs, choose IP Address > Insert to bring up the Insert IP Address window. Type an IP address and NetMask for routing, and click Insert.

    · For IPX protocol VLANs, choose IPX > Insert to bring up the IPX Insert Address window. Type the IPX network address, and click Insert.

    This selected encapsulation method must match the selected VLAN protocol.
