Creating a Source MAC-Based VLAN

To create a source MAC-based VLAN:

1. From the Device Manager menu bar, choose VLAN > VLANs > Basic, and click Insert.

2. Change the Type field to bySrcMac.
3. Enter the VLAN ID number or accept the one automatically assigned.
4. Type the VLAN name (optional).

If no name is entered, a default is created.

5. Select the VLAN color (optional).

Device Manager suggests a color, but you can change it.

6. Select the Spanning Tree Group ID of the VLAN.
7. In the StaticMembers field, select the ports that will be static members of the VLAN.
8. In the NotAllowToJoin field, select the ports that cannot be part of the IP Subnet-based VLAN.
9. Specify the port membership by clicking the port buttons in the StaticMembers or NotAllowedToJoin fields.
10. Specify the Aging Time (the timeout period in seconds for aging out the dynamic member ports of the VLAN) or use the default of 600 seconds.
11. Select the HighPriority (optional).
12. Click Insert.
13. In the Basic window, highlight the newly created VLAN, click MAC, and then click Insert.

The edit Mac window opens as shown in Figure 21.

14. From the edit Mac window, click Insert.

The Insert Mac window opens (Figure 21).

15. Type the source MAC address for the VLAN, and click Insert.

Accepting Tagged and Untagged Frames

In the Accelar switches, whether or not tagged frames are sent or received is configured at the port level. Tagging is set as true or false for the port and applied to all VLANs on that port. You can select whether or not to discard:

• Tagged frames received on a port where tagging is disabled
• Untagged frames received on a port where tagging is enabled

The default is not to discard the frames. You can also designate the port-based VLAN to which these frames are assigned by setting the tagged port's default VLAN ID (the default is VLAN 1). This port-based VLAN must be in spanning tree group 1.

An Accelar port with tagging enabled is a port from which all frames sent are tagged. A tagged port can be configured to discard untagged frames or to associate them with a VLAN. In the latter case, when an untagged frame is received on a tagged port, it is sent to the user-specified VLAN.

A port with tagging disabled is a port that does not send tagged frames. If a tagged frame is forwarded out a port with tagging set to false, the switch removes the tag from the frame before sending it out the port. When a port with tagging set to false receives a frame, it can be configured to discard tagged frames or to associate them with the VLAN specified in the tag.

Note: To optimize performance, on untagged ports in configurations where you do not expect to see tagged frames, you should set DiscardTaggedFrames to true. However, on untagged ports for interconnecting switches, it is probably better to set DiscardTaggedFrames to false. That way, if you should convert an interswitch port from an untagged port to a tagged port, you will not lose connectivity

To set a port to discard tagged frames it receives, click the port and choose Edit Port > VLAN and check the box entitled DiscardTaggedFrames.
